The municipality and town of Witkowo is situated in Wielkopolska, in the county
of Gniezno. It has an area of 184.4 km2 and 13830 inhabitants (including 8000
in the town of Witkowo). The municipality comprises the town Witkowo
(administrative centre, centre of small industry, trade and services) and 26 villages.
Agriculture, tourism and services are the most important economic activities in
the area. The large number of lakes and forests, totalling 1026 ha and 3900 ha
in area respectively (27% of the municipality), together with the unpolluted
environment, rich flora and fauna, beautiful landscape, unique climate and
historical and cultural heritage, all contribute to the development of tourism
and recreation in the region.
Agricultural production in the municipality, with 900 farms covering 12 125 ha
of land (66% of the area of the municipality), is indicative of the high level of
agricultural development.
Trade is represented by 650 small and medium-sized entrepreneurs.
The main sources of employment for the inhabitants are within agriculture,
tourism, private companies and state facilities, including the 33rd Air Base.
There are 4 primary schools, 2 secondary schools and an association of sixth
form colleges in the municipality.
To develop sport in the area there are a city stadium, 4 sports halls and
numerous playing fields.
Altogether, 38 sports, touristic, cultural and social organizations are at the disposal of the local citizens.
